American football is the most popular spectator sport in the USA outbidding baseball. There is a well-developed system of league games and the calendar culminates in the Super Bowl, an annual extravaganza. It enjoys highest spectator attendance and wide television coverage. Minnesota Vikings is a popular team from the city of Minneapolis.
The National Football League is the apex professional body that controls the game. The Minnesota Vikings were initially part of the American Football League and joined the NFL in 1961. They have won their divisions 16 times and appeared four times in the Super Bowl.
It has had a checkered history since its formation. Thanks to an aggressive marketing program by the team's founders, attendance at many of its games at the Metropolitan Stadium hovered around 85%. Eventually, the capacity of the stadium was increased.
The Vikings have played against several teams in the NFL but the much talked about rivalry is against Chicago Bears. The Vikings enjoy huge fan following and every move by the team's coach and manager throughout the decades has been a subject of immense scrutiny and animated discussion amidst the fans.
The team has an appealing uniform and logo. The logo consists of a profile of a norsman, the original Viking. The uniform is white pants, gold trim and either purple or white jerseys. The helmet is deep purple with a Viking horn logo that has been redesigned recently.
The team has some of the best players in the league like quarterback Brad Johnson and running back Chester Taylor. In fact, Chester's excellent performance against the Bears this season has become a talking point despite the ultimate loss of the Vikings.
Right from Norm van Brocklin, the team has had some of the best coaches in the league and the current coach Brad Childress is known to bring an innovative approach to the Viking's game.
